Full Description
PRN 43720
(TF 3580 9829) MEDIEVAL POTTERY FOUND WITHIN THE PLOUGH SOIL BY THE FARMER. THERE IS A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF POTTERY INCLUDING SOME FAIRLY LARGE PIECES SUGGESTING THAT ARCHAEOLOGICAL DEPOSITS BELOW THE TOPSOIL ARE BEING DISTURBED BY PLOUGHING. THE FARMER ALSO REPORTED THE PRESENCE OF SANDSTONE BLOCKS WHICH ARE NOT SHAPED BUT APPEAR TO BE IN A ROUGH LINE WITHIN THE FIELD. THESE BLOCKS ARE OCCASIONALLY PULLED OUT BY THE PLOUGH. THEY MAY NOT HAVE ANY ARCHAEOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE. {1}
(TF 3580 9829) Magnetic susceptibility and magnetometer survey of the field known as 'Burnt Mound' produced evidence for activity which may be connected with previous finds on the site. High magnetic susceptibility readings suggest that activity involving burning was taking place, and the intense magnetic anomalies here may well be the remains of industrial structures. There is evidence for additional features and enclosures but it is not possible to ascertain whether or not these are indicative of permanent occupation of the site. {2}
There is aerial photographic evidence, from the national mapping programme, for medieval ridge and furrow in this area of West End. {3}
Earthworks were observed on aerial photographs dated to 1971 as part of the Lincolnshire Coastal Grazing Marsh project. {4}
All of the earthworks have been destroyed by arable cultivation. {5}
