Full Description

Cropmarks of a probable prehistoric enclosure, to the north-east of Warren Farm, Welton le Wold. Identified on aerial photographs examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. May possibly represent the remains of a Neolithic long barrow. {1}{2}{3}{4} The interpretation of this feature as the remains of a Neolithic long barrow has been generally accepted. The barrow is situated on a spur at the head of the River Lud valley, facing north-east, and with its long axis running parallel to the contours. It is a short oval-shaped enclosure, measuring roughly 30m by 17m. {5}{6} This feature was scheduled in August 2021 as the remains of a Neolithic long barrow. It was designated along with the remains of a probable Bronze Age round barrow lying 50m to the south (see MLI82188). The long barrow is visible on aerial photographs as cropmarks and soilmarks of a roughly oval shaped enclosure, aligned on a north-west by south-east axis, and with maximum dimensions measuring 36m by 20m. The presence of a former mound over the barrow is suggested by compacted surface soilmarks on the aerial photography. There are no earthworks visible on the ground which has been altered by later agricultural activity. {7}{8}
