Full Description

THE SMALL VILLAGE OF DALDERBY ONCE HAD ITS OWN PARISH CHURCH. A DISTURBED NON SURVEYABLE MOUND AND AMORPHOUS EARTHWORKS ARE VISIBLE AT THE PUBLISHED SITE OF THIS CHURCH. {1} THE SITE OF ST MARTIN'S CHURCH REMAINS VISIBLE AS AN EARTHWORK IN A FIELD, SOUTH OF MANOR FARM, DALDERBY. PARCHING OF THE GRASS AND SLIGHT TRACES OF WALL-TOPS SEEMS TO SUGGEST THAT IT WAS FLINT BUILT, WITH A TOWER TO THE WEST. THE CHURCH STOOD ON A RAISED PLATFORM, WHICH PROBABLY INCORPORATED A GRAVEYARD, AND BELONGED TO THE VILLAGE OF DALDERBY, WHICH HAS NOW SHRUNK AND ONLY THE MANOR FARM AND A FEW ASSOCIATED BUILDINGS NOW REMAIN. THE CHURCH WAS DEMOLISHED IN 1742, PRESUMABLY DUE TO THE DECLINE OF THE VILLAGE POPULATION, AND THE BUILDING MATERIALS WERE REUSED AT SCRIVELSBY. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
