Full Description
Two round barrows standing in small earthwork. The eastern is bell-shaped, diameter 100ft, heigh 20ft. The western is of much the same diameter, rather lower and flat topped. Eastern mound excavated 1892 - bits of broken pottery and some ?dog bones had already been dug into, nothing conculsive found. Accepted as Roman in 'Antiquity 1936. {5}
TWO LARGE ROUND BURIAL MOUNDS, CLASSIFIED AS ROMAN. WHEN EXCAVATED IN 1892 A PUDDLED CLAY CIST CONTAINING BLACK EARTH WAS FOUND IN THE MOUND AT TF30296164. THE BARROWS ARE ENCLOSED BY A DITCH, MUCH OF WHICH IS PROBABLY MODERN. A THIRD BARROW TO THE NORTH WAS EXCAVATED IN 1780 AND NO LONGER SURVIVES (PRN 42926). {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
THE MONUMENT INCLUDES TWO ROMAN BARROWS SITUATED ON THE EDGE OF WEST FEN, 180M WEST OF HOME FARM. THE AREA BETWEEN THE BARROWS, WHICH WILL CONTAIN ARCHAEOLOGICAL DEPOSITS RELATING TO THEIR CONSTRUCTION AND USE, IS ALSO INCLUDED IN THE SCHEDULING TOGETHER WITH THE ENCLOSING DITCH AND CAUSEWAY. BOTH BARROW MOUNDS ARE ROUGHLY CIRCULAR WITH STEEP SIDES AND FLATTENED SUMMITS. THE WESTERN BARROW HAS A MAXIMUM DIAMETER OF 28M AND STANDS TO A HEIGHT OF APPROXIMATELY 5M. THE SECOND BARROW, LYING ABOUT 68M TO THE EAST, MEASURES SOME 24M IN DIAMETER AND IS ABOUT 6.2M HIGH. {7}, HEIGHT 6.2M, DIAMETER 30M, HTM 6M
