DURING WORK IN ADVANCE OF A PROPOSED RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT A NUMBER OF INTERCUTTING PITS WERE FOUND THAT HAD INITIALLY BEEN DUG FOR CLAY EXTRACTION FOR POTTERY MANUFACTURE. THESE PITS HAD THEN BEEN BACK-FILLED WITH POTTERY DEBRIS FROM NEARBY KILNS, THERE IS ALSO A SUGGESTION THAT THERE IS A KILN IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO ONE OF THE TRENCHES. THE AREA WAS PART OF A LARGER INDUSTRIAL SITE FOR PART OF THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD LATER BEING USED FOR DOMESTIC OCCUPATION. THE REMAINS OF A TIMBER BUILDING FOUNDED ON AN INTERRUPTED STONE SILL WAS IDENTIFIED ON THE STREET FRONTAGE. THE POTTERY FOUND DATES BACK TO THE LATE THRITEENTH TO LATE FOURTEENTH CENTURIES. {1}{2}
A watching brief in 1999/2000 on land at 72 Main Road (TF 3940 6341) following evaluation in 1996 revealed numerous backfilled clay extraction pits, most intercutting one another. Again, evidence suggests that the peak of activity was thirteenth to fourteenth century, with considerably less in the fourteenth to sixteenth. {3}{4}
During a further watching brief on groundworks on land south of 72 Main Road deposits associated with a previously unknown late medieval pottery kiln were revealed. Evidence of backfilled caly extraction pits, filled with a mixture of clay, firing waste and pottery wasters was found over the areas affected by development. {5}{6}
