Full Description

The remains of a small boat are visible, mostly buried in sand, on the beach at Sutton on Sea. They are shown on aerial photographs provided by the Environmental Agency and taken in advance of beach nourishment works. {1} The boat is a small post-medieval or early modern fishing boat. A photographic recording and partial excavation of the remains of the boat was undertaken in September 1997. The remains are of part of the bow section of a wooden carvel built sailing vessel, although only a third of the original length of the boat remains. The exterior face of the port side was uncovered. {2}{3} Photographs of the wreck were taken in October 2007, during site visits conducted for the Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey. {4} Subsequent survey undertaken in 2010 showed that its condition had deteriorated significantly and that some timbers had been lost. {5}
