Full Description

Home Farmhouse is listed as a probable early 18th century mud and stud cottage, with some 20th century alterations. The building is timber-framed, but also has some rendered and colourwashed brick, and features a half-hipped pantile roof with a roughly central ridge stack. The building is single-storey with garret, and has a four bay, south-east facing front, with a gabled brick porch doorway to the left. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} Home Farmhouse was the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in September 1994 to inform the structure's future maintenance and conservation. Although listed as being early 18th century, the surveyors were of the opinion that the building had earlier origins, and likely dated to the late 17th century. The structure is a one-and-a-half storey, timber-framed house, which was originally four bays in length, with a lobby entrance in the south hall. The timber framing was supported on a sill beam, which is thought to be a relatively uncommon feature of buildings of this date and type in Lincolnshire. Some of the timbers showed evidence of re-use, possibly being taken from an earlier structure. The steeply pitched common rafter roof is half-hipped at each gable, with the present covering of pantiles thought to have likely been of thatch originally. 18th century alterations included the insertion of a fireplace in the parlour, and stairs to the garret alongside the new brick chimney stack. The building is thought to have been sub-divided into two cottages in the early 19th century, but had returned to single occupancy again by the late 19th century. Late 19th to 20th century alterations include the addition of a lean-to on the east wall. {2}{3} Significant alteration and restoration works were conducted to the building in the late 1990s. The works included the removal of some of the existing stud walls, replacement of the internal floor coverings, and the replacement of the pantile roof with thatch. The building is now called Holme Farm Cottage. {4}{5}
