Full Description
The late 19th century expansion of Skegness prompted the construction of a new waterworks complex at this location. Work started in about 1880, and included the construction of a water tower on this site. As Skegness continued to grow, the water supply proved insufficient to meet the town's needs, and a new 110ft tall, reinforced concrete 'Intze' tower was built in 1926, as a replacement of the original tower. Both towers had been built on the relatively weak clay subsoil of this area, and problems immediately arose after the construction of the new tower. As the tank was being filled, the tower began to move, and a clearly visible lean in the structure was soon apparent. The 200,000 gallon tank was hurriedly emptied, which stopped the movement, but left the tower unusable. An investigation was immediately launched, and resulted in extensive engineering works, which managed to stabilise the tower and bring it back to an almost vertical alignment (although a slight lean was still apparent). The tower finally entered service in 1930, and continued in use until it was demolished in 1981. {1}{2}
