Full Description
A First World War pillbox visible in photographs on postcards from the 1920s and 1930s. It was multi-sided (probably with six sides), and was known as 'The Sentinel Pillbox'. It would appear to be on the site of the later coastguard post which was built on top of it. {1}{2}
The pillbox was adapted for use during the Second World War when it formed part of the Coastal Crust defences. The site was also used as an infantry post of the 12th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. The hexagonal base of the pillbox could still be discerned in 2002. {3}{4}
A timber lookout shelter now (2013) stands on this site and the pillbox below is buried in the sea bank. Local information states that the pillbox still exists with a concrete pad above it. There is a concrete foundation slab on which the timber lookout stands. {5}
