Full Description
PRN 43238
EVIDENCE OF DITCHES AND A PIT WAS FOUND DURING AN EVALUATION OF A SITE ON WITHAM ROAD PRIOR TO DEVELOPMENT FOR HOUSING. THE DITCHES CONTAINED LATE IRON AGE POTTERY, SLAG AND THE REMAINS OF A FIRED CLAY LOOMWEIGHT. THE EVALUATION SUGGESTS THAT THERE IS A LATE IRON AGE SETTLEMENT NEARBY. THE SITE WAS SEALED BY ALLUVIUM. {1}{2}
IT IS THOUGHT THAT THE EDGE OF THE IRON AGE DITCH PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED DURING THE EVALUATION WAS OBSERVED DURING FURTHER MONITORING OF THE SITE. OTHER GULLIES OR SMALL PITS WERE RECORDED NEAR TO THE DITCH, CLOSE TO WITHAM ROAD. THE DITCH IS THOUGHT TO REPRESENT THE BOUNDARY OF A SETTLEMENT EXTENDING FURTHER SOUTH EAST. THUS, THE AREA EXAMINED DURING THE WATCHING BRIEF WAS PERIPHERAL TO THIS SETTLEMENT, AND THIS WOULD EXPLAIN THE LACK OF OCCUPATION FEATURES. {3}{2}
