Full Description

Cropmarks of a Neolithic long barrow, to the south-west of Sycamore Farm, Binbrook. Visible as a regular, curvilinear enclosure, defined by a single ditch measuring 40m by 18m. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}{2} Cropmarks of a Neolithic long barrow, situated in a slope position at the head of a deep dry valley, facing north. It is aligned south-east to north-west, with its long axis running parallel to the contours. It is a trapeziform enclosure with straight terminals, and the ditch on the north side is staggered on plan. A small circular feature, 8m in diameter, is visible at the east end. {3}{4} The long barrow is located 350m south-west of Sycamore Farm. It does not appear to have a causeway, and this is thought to indicate that the long barrow was not elaborated with a mound. Inside the ditch circuit there is a circular feature, which is probably the main burial site. It was scheduled on 16th April 1999. {5} The barrow shows on more recent aerial photogrpahy of this area as cropmarks and soilamrks, and as a shallow earthwork. The barrow is defined by a roughly rectilinear enclosure, elongated north-west by south-east and with maximum dimensions measuring 47.7m by 22.5m. An internal mound does show as a shallow spread earthwork, though this has been ploughed down to such an extent as to be much broader than the footprint of the barrow enclosure. {6}{7} The re-analysis of aerial photographic data prompted an amendment to the scheduling for this monument to be made in May 2024. The scheduling now more accurately covers the remains of the long barrow. The internal area is recorded as containing a circular feature about 8m in diameter, situated towards the south-eastern end. This location suggests that the feature probably represents the main burial site and focus of ritual activity. Investigations at similar sites elsewhere in the region indicate that other features, including pits and postholes, are likely to be preserved beneath the present ground surface. Valuable archaeological deposits will be preserved in the mound material, on the buried ground surface beneath the mound and in the fills of the ditch. These have potential to provide rare information concerning the dating and construction of the monument and the sequence of mortuary practices at the site. The same deposits will also retain environmental evidence illustrating the nature of the landscape in which the monument was set.
