Full Description

Cropmarks of a possible Neolithic long barrow, to the south-east of Ludford Grange. Identified on aerial photographs examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}{2}{3} The long barrow is situated on a spur, overlooking the head of the River Bain valley. It is aligned south-east to north-west, and the long axis runs parallel to the contours. It is a trapezoidal enclosure with convex terminals. The ditch circuit shows a possible causeway at the southern end, but upcast from a modern chalk pit partly obscures the line. Fieldwalking revealed no surface traces or finds of prehistoric date. {4}{5} The long barrow to the south-east of Ludford Grange was scheduled in December 2021. The barrow is visible on aerial photography as a clearly defined, trapezoidal-shaped crop and soil mark with convex terminals, measuring 64.5m by 28m. It is heavily truncated at the south-east end by a sizeable chalk pit. The edge of the pit shows paler red-brown soils from approximately 0.5m – 1m depth which have been brought to the surface. The barrow is not easily discernible on the ground, with the site having been disc-cultivated. {6}{7}
