Full Description
Cropmarks of a probable Neolithic long barrow, to the south-west of White Pit, Ketsby. Visible as an oval-shaped ditched enclosure, orientated north-west to south-east. It lies in close proximity to another possible long barrow located to the immediate north-east (see MLI43176). Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}
This long barrow is situated on a south-facing upper valley slope. It is aligned south-east to north-west, with the long axis traversing the contours. It is a trapezoidal enclosure with convex ends, measuring 58m by 18m (tapering to 12m). The enclosure follows a parallel alignment to the extant Beacon Plantation long barrow, located 550m to the north-west (see MLI ). Field walking of this area conducted in November 1993 revealed the course of the ditch as an area of more lush growth in the germinating cover crop. {2}{3}
The barrow is visible on more recent aerial photography as an oval-shaped enclosure, orientated north-west to south-east, and defined by a single ditch measuring 60m by 18m. Cropmarks of a large pit lying adjacent to the south-western side of the barrow were also noted. {4}{5}
