Full Description
Cropmarks of a Neolithic long barrow, to the north-west of Calceby. Visible as a ditch-defined enclosure, open at the south-eastern end and measuring roughly 30m by 10m. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}
This long barrow is situated on a slope position, at the tip of a ridge overlooking Calceby Beck to the north, with the long axis running parallel to the contours, and aligned south-east to north-west. It is a trapezoidal enclosure, with the south-east end open. The side ditches show as wider marks than the terminal ditch; recorded as soilmarks. A possible Bronze Age ring ditch shows 60m to the north-east (see MLI82265). {2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
The long barrow to the north-west of Calceby was scheduled in January 2020. The barrow lies below the crest of the hill to the north of the Bluestone Heath Road, overlooking an un-named tributary of Calceby Beck. It lies on a north-east facing slope, and is visible on aerial photographs as a U-shaped ditch orientated on a north-west to south-east alignment, and appearing open on the south-eastern side. At the north-western end, irregular crop marks indicate a circular feature which appears to represent later modification of the long barrow. The barrow, including the dimensions of its possible spread mound, is approximately 60m long and 40m wide. {8}{9}
