Full Description

Two concentrations of medieval and post-medieval pottery and medieval roof tiles were revealed in 1991, during a watching brief at Toynton County Primary School. {1} A laid rectangular brick surface with no pottery concentrations was revealed during a further watching brief, conducted in 1992. The feature was thought to be the remains of a late medieval or post-medieval tile kiln. Like the tile kiln at Mareham le Fen, it had two possible stoke holes, and tile similar to that produced at Mareham le Fen was discovered. A reddened clay feature was discovered beneath the tile kiln, and this was thought to be the remains of an earlier pottery kiln, that could be dated no earlier than the mid 15th century. There was also a stone wall underlying these features, which may possibly be the foundations of a building. {2}
