Full Description
Medieval settlement remains located to the north and south of Alford Road. Fieldwalking of the stripped easement to the north of the Alford Road revealed a number of backfilled ditch and pit features containing quantities of medieval pottery sherds, lesser amounts of daub and animal bone fragments. The site lay beside the former railway line and below a pasture field containing slight traces of probably ridge and furrow. The field also contained what appeared to be slight settlement earthworks.
Excavation on land north of Alford Road produced evidence of a range of settlement features including ditches and a rubbish pit. The features produced pottery dated to the 13th to 16th century. {1}{2}{3}
Further fieldwalking in 1997 produced a sparse scatter of medieval pottery across the field. A geophysical survey failed to identify any archaeological anomalies. {4}{5}{6}
Seven trenches were excavated, on an area of land north of Alford Road, only two of which revealed archaeological features. A group of ditches were excavated which produced pottery dating to the 13th to 15th century. The archaeological remains that were exposed appear to reflect the proximity of a small medieval settlement towards the south-western side of the site. {7}{8}
