Full Description
PRN 42821 (includes old PRNs 42822-5)
TO THE NE OF GREAT CARLTON VILLAGE LIES AN AREA OF DESERTED FENHOUSES AND ASSOCIATED FIELD SYSTEM. THESE SETTLEMENT REMAINS LIE ALONG THE SLIGHTLY HIGHER LAND ABOVE THE ENCLOSED FEN THAT FORMS THE SEAWARD END OF THIS MARSH PARISH. SEEN ON AN RAF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPH OF 1947. {1}, HTM 3M
Geophysical survey conducted from the 21st to 28th May 2003, identified a series of anomalies in a field immediately southeast of Walk Farm, Great Carlton. The field contained the earthwork remains of ridge and furrow, and these were detected as faint linear anomalies running northwest to southeast. Significantly stronger anomalies were found towards the centre of the field, forming a linear and rectilinear arrangement (identified as the remains of field systems and/or enclosures). Several pit-like anomalies were detected close by, representing areas of burning or possibly domestic dumping. {2}
A watching brief was conducted during groundworks on the Maltby le Marsh to Manby replacement water main. Evidence of ridge and furrow was uncovered. One sherd of 13th to 14th century pottery was recovered. {3} {4}
Earthworks were also seen on aerial photographs as part of the national mapping programme. These were interpreted as crofts, tofts, building platforms, a moat, ridge and furrow and a boundary. {5}
