Full Description

THE SITE OF THE MEDIEVAL VILLAGE OF SCRAFIELD, THE ONLY VISIBLE SURVIVING EVIDENCE FOR WHICH IS THE GRAVEYARD OF ST MICHAEL'S CHURCH (SEE 00324). {1} THE NORTHERN PART OF THE DMV WAS LEVELLED IN MAY 1977. {2} Scrafield village is first mentioned in documentary sources in 1183. The name 'Scrafield' is probably a hybrid compound of Old Norse 'skreith' meaning a land-slide and the Old English 'feld' meaning open country. {3} The National Mapping programme have identified earthworks and cropmarks of ridge and furrow, crofts, boundaries, and boundaries which are probably connected to the village of Scrafield. {4}
