Scrafield village is first mentioned in documentary sources in 1183. The name 'Scrafield' is probably a hybrid compound of Old Norse 'skreith' meaning a land-slide and the Old English 'feld' meaning open country. {3}
The National Mapping programme have identified earthworks and cropmarks of ridge and furrow, crofts, boundaries, and boundaries which are probably connected to the village of Scrafield. {4}
