Full Description

A tumulus is marked in this location to the north-west of Saleby, on the 1st edition 1" Ordnance Survey map. {1} An earthwork mound was noted as a slight rise against the skyline in this location, during a site visit conducted by OS Field Investigators in 1964. It was thought possible that the mound marked the site of a Bronze Age round barrow, though this interpretation remains unverified. {2}{3} The field has been in arable cultivation and subject to modern ploughing for many years. No obvious earthwork can now be discerned on the Google Maps aerial imagery layer, and the feature was not picked up by the earlier study of historical aerial photographs, examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. Some below ground remains of this feature may still survive, however. {4}
