Full Description
A water-filled moat enclosing a stack yard, at Gillwood's Grange, to the south of the village of North Reston. The moat is of unusual shape, and is thought to be post-medieval in date, being almost certainly only ornamental. {1}{2}
Earthworks of a probable post-medieval ornamental moat at Gillwood's Grange, identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. Visible as a curvilinear enclosure defined by a substantial ditch measuring roughly 70m by 40m. The late post-medieval farmstead of Gillwood's Grange sits partially within the moat (see MLI127740). The placename may indicate that this was the site of an earlier medieval grange, and possibly suggests that the present moat might be a remodelling of an earlier medieval moat here, although this interpretation remains unconfirmed. Three blocks of medieval ridge and furrow earthworks abut the moat to the south and east (see MLI127739). {3}
There is a documentary reference to a dwelling, field and pasture called 'Gillewude', dated 11 October 1262. {4}
