Full Description

The Church of St Leonard retains an 11th century chancel arch, a north doorway of about 1200 and a Decorated (c.1290 AD - c.1350 AD) southern doorway. It was much restored in 1873. {1}{2}{3}{4} Parish church with some architectural features surviving from the 11th, late 12th, 14th and 15th centuries, and restored in 1873. It was constructed of squared chalk and greenstone coursed rubble with some red brick patching and has a concrete tiled roof. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {5} The church is a two cell building, with a westernt nave and an eastern chancel. The nave has external dimensions of 8.86m by 6.43m. The chancel has external dimensions of 6.43m by 5.38m. There are six identifiable phases of construction and alteration to the church. The earliest feature of the church is the 11th century chancel arch. Alterations were carried out in the 13th and 14th centuries. The eastern window was added in the 15th century. Major restorationand alteration was carried out in the 18th century; the west wall was rebuilt, this may indicate that the nave was shortened. In 1873 the church was partially reroffed and three windows were installed in the nave, the chancel's east wall was also rebuilt at this time. The earliest documentary reference to the church is from two mid-12th century charters of Greenfield priory. The church and its advowson were gifted to Greenfield priory by Amfrid of Haugh. {6}
