Full Description

A clay-lined pit was found in this location in 1947, during quarrying of land at South Thoresby Warren. The pit measured roughly 9ft deep by 11ft across at its mouth. It contained large, irregularly-shaped bricks, blackened on one side and some slightly curved. The bricks were thought to have formed part of some kind of structure, possibly being arranged around an oven or flue of some kind. Fragments of sawn and partially calcined red deer antler and other animal bones were found among the wood ash, though no pottery or dating material was recovered, and the feature remains of uncertain origin. {1}{2}
