Full Description

The Church of St Michael retains a Norman chancel arch but it is mainly Perpendicular in style. It was much restored in 1882. It may well have been the monastic church of the nearby former Benedictine priory (see PRN 42374). {1}{2}{3} A parish church dating from the early 12th century, which underwent alterations in the late 15th, early 16th, late 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. It was constructed of green sandstone rubble blocks, limestone ashlar dressings and some red brick and has lead roofs with some slate. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {4} Foundation courses of the south wall of the former south aisle were recorded in July 2001, during archaeological monitoring of new drainage works around the south porch. The south aisle is thought to have been demolished at some point in the 15th or 16th century, at around the same time that the chancel was remodelled. The chancel arch sits on what were thought to be Anglo-Saxon piers, which may suggest that the current church is a replacement of a late Saxon church in this area. Two pieces of post-medieval roof tile, probably originally from the nave roof, and two sherds of 16th to 18th century pottery were also recovered during the monitoring. {5}{6} A crude drawing (graffito) of a ship has been noted inside the Church of St Michael. The carving is about 15cm long, and is located on the south wall of the tower, some 50 to 60cm above the current floor level. It was thought that the ship may be of the medieval 'cog' type of vessel. {7}
