Full Description

A lost hamlet in Scremby parish. Both Greinby and Grebby are mentioned in 1086. At the time of Elizabeth I, there were five families living in Grebby. {1}{2}{3} The National Mapping Programme has plotted earthworks possibly associated with Grebby from aerial photographs. These include lynchets, boundaries and enclosures. {4} The Medieval Village Research Group Index states that Grebby (or Greinby) was mentioned in the Domesday Book, but does not appear in the lay subsidies of the 1330s. It appears in the Diocesan Returns of 1563, but is not taxed separately. The remains are visible on RAF verticals, and have been sketched. The visual quality of the earthworks was 'medium', being legible in some areas. {5}
