C. W Philips states, ' The bridge over the River Bain at Horncastle seems to be of comparatively modern date. An old man told me that there was once a ford and a fugitive from the Winceby flight was drowned there.' Certainly the older houses on the approach to the bridge have been built down to a lower level than that of the bridge approach and have to be entered down steps.{1}
