Full Description
ROMAN POTTERY OF THE 3RD AND 4TH CENTURIES, INCLUDING COLOUR COATED WARES, FOUND IN OLD CHAPEL LANE DURING BUILDING WORK IN 1976. {1}
AN EVALUATION ON THE SITE OF THE NEW VICARAGE REVEALED EVIDENCE FOR THE ROMAN SETTLEMENT IN BURGH LE MARSH. THE DATE OF THESE REMAINS WAS LATE IN THE ROMAN PERIOD; MOST OF THE POTTERY WAS C4, AND IS INDICATIVE OF AN URBAN ENVIRONMENT. THERE IS AN INDICATION OF EARLIER SETTLEMENT BY SAMIAN WARE. THE LATEST ROMAN FEATURE RECORDED WAS A METALLED SURFACE WHICH HAD BEEN LAID AFTER TIPPING SOIL DELIBERATELY TO LEVEL THE SLOPE; THIS SHOWS THAT AT THE END OF ROMAN OCCUPATION ON THE SITE THERE WAS STILL SOME DEVELOPMENT TAKING PLACE. THE LAND USAGE ON THE SITE APPEARS TO HAVE CHANGED IN NATURE FROM URBAN TO RURAL SETTLEMENT, AS INDICATED BY PLOUGHING AN ANIMAL HUSBANDRY. {2}{3}
