Full Description

Scatters of Romano-British artefacts have been found in this location on Mablethorpe beach, including: 'In 1928, Dr. H. Mattingly examined, in the Department of Coins and Medals of the British Museum, a small hoard of 22 antoniniani, found at Mablethorpe.' The coins were recovered from an area of Mablethorpe Beach (at TF 51 84), and were issues of the emperors Gallienus to Tetricus II (253 - 274 AD). {1} Sherds of Romano-British pottery and 3rd century Roman coins were found at the low water mark in 1943. {2} A second hoard of Roman coins was found in this area in 1946: 'Mr. M.T. Haly, on January 5th found a number of bronze Roman coins in an earthenware bowl of Flavian type, 5" across and 2.5" deep, in the mudbank known as the Roman bank below highwater mark about 50 yards from the promenade at Mablethorpe.' A total of 33 coins, ranging from Augustus to Valens (27 BC - 378 AD) were recorded, although it may be that the assemblage actually represents 2 separate hoards that were accidentally mixed, given the range of emperors represented. Sherds of 2nd and 3rd century pottery were also found, including a rim sherd, now in Lincoln Museum and described as 'Bowl form 29 in the style of Passenus'. {3}{4}{5}{6}{7} Roman pottery was recovered from a discrete area on the beach at Mablethorpe in 1997 by the County Archaeologist (TF 5139 8437). The assemblage totalled 129 sherds and ranged in date from the mid to late 2nd century. Most of the pottery was from greyware cooking pots, some sherds being severely burnt. Two greyware vessels were distorted and were possibly wasters. At a slightly later date two complete vessels were excavated from the site by an amateur archaeologist. One is a fine greyware copy of a BB2 beaker-type with acute lattice decoration from the shoulder to the lower wall and is generally dated from the early to the later 2nd century. The other is also a well-made greyware vessel dated to the early to mid 2nd century. {8}
