PRN 41387
Several log coffins were found in the Market Place in 1822. Lids covered with lines 1inch in diameter down the centre. One burial contained a relatively well preserved body and coffin, 7 feet 3 inches long by 1 foot 8 inches wide to 1 foot 6 inches wide. No dating evidence was recorded. {1}
The Cragg manuscripts note 14 log coffins were found along with gold and silver coins, while digging the cellars to a new house adjoining the market place. {2}{3}
White's directory suggests that coffins may be Saxon in date. {4}
