Full Description
Romano-British pottery was found after deep ploughing in 1955. The area was also visited in 1959 and an extensive scatter of 3rd century pottery was found associated with dark soilmarks. An excavation was carried out on the field containing dark bands of soil. There were organics found which suggested these were cultivation ditches. Aerial photographs indicated ditches in a rectangular grid covering at least 12 acres. {1}{2}
Romano-British pottery was found to be particularly plentiful on the site. The dating from the pottery indicated that the field system was third century, almost certainly the latter part of that century. It was suggested that the site was an experimental vineyard which failed. {3}
