Full Description
The present Brackenborough Hall is a Georgian house of five bays and two storeys. It is likely that the present hall replaced an older building on the same site. In 1856 the hall was referred to as 'an ancient moated farmhouse'. {1}{2}{3}{4}
The hall itself and also the stable block (see MLI93664) and a folly (see MLI92973) in the grounds are listed. For the full description and the legal address of these listed buildings please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {5}
Brackenborough Hall was requisitioned by the army in 1940, when it was used as a regional HQ for anti-invasion forces. A number of structures were built at this time to improve the defences of the site, including two brick and concrete blockhouses (see MLI125991 and MLI125993). Several weapons pits are also thought to have been located around the perimeter of the site. {6}{7}{8}
Brackenborough Hall was the subject of historical research in 2015, when an assessment of its significance was produced, prior to proposed renovations to some of the ancilliary structures. The hall is built of red brick laid in a Flemish bond, with painted ashlar dressings, and plain tile roofs. A brief history of the ownership of the hall and surrounding estate was included in the assessment. {9}
