Full Description
Two medieval pottery kilns were excavated at the south end of Toynton All Saints in 1967 following the discovery of pottery scatters and brick rubble during the draining and ploughing of the field. The first kiln was a circular, well-built brick structure with three courses of surviving wall on the east side. This kiln had five flues, the south-east one having been used as an entrance. Three floors were uncovered, and there was evidence of major repairs and alterations. Pottery including fragments of pancheon, bung-hole storage jars, jugs, dishes, chafing dishes and pipkins was recovered, mostly from Floor A. This kiln was archaeomagnetically dated to 1475-1525, meaning that it was operating 200 years later than the kiln in this area; the second kiln was a clay built structure very similar to the 'Roses' kiln found to the north (see PRN 41032), and of similar date (both were archaeomagnetically dated to 1275-1325). It had also been repaired and rebuilt at various points. Pottery recovered from this kiln included fragments of jugs, pancheons, cooking pots, dishes and pipkins. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
