Full Description

40826 Norcotes is a former settlement in the parish of West Ashby, which is mentioned in medieval documents. A series of earthworks, centred at TF 263 730, in the present-day settlement of Midthorpe may represent the remains of Norcotes (which is a name not in local use). These earthworks include the remains of two moats (see 40827 and 40850). {1}{3}{6} A watching brief at TF 2650 7294 revealed several ditches and pits which are probably related to the medieval settlement, although most of these features were undated. The two features which were dated were of medieval date. One of these was a large pit or ditch which was probably used as a domestic rubbish pit. Its fill contained frequent ash and charcoal, pottery and animal bone. All the features were covered by a deep soil horizon containing a small amount of pottery, indicating an episode of abandonment in the area which probably began in the 16th century and lasted for several centuries. {7}{8}
