Full Description

PRN 40796 Wyham settlement is mentioned in the Domesday Book. In 1428 the village had fewer than ten householders and only one by 1563. In 1660 the last priest was instituted. {1}{2} The village remains were located on aerial photographs around TF27459502. {3} There are no surface remains of the village. {1} Wyham Grange is the modern name for the site and is probably not a reference to a monastic site that may have stood here. A watching brief at TF2784 9507 revealed information relating to the development to the present house (PRN 44630) and the medieval settlement layout that preceded it. It is thought that there was a building of chalk block foundations that preceded the 17th century building. The existing building is 19th century but some earlier elements may be present within the current building. A wide linear depression was noted across the site which has been tentatively interpreted as a medieval lane to the church and open fields. {5}{6}
