Full Description

PRN 40777 A disused windmill marked on the Ordnance Survey 1:10000 sheet; on 1956 six inch map marked 'windmill'. {1} The strangest of all the surviving windmills in the county from a structural viewpoint, this mill was originally built in 1820. Another two storeys were then added at a later date, but as the mill had very little slope these storeys were added by inserting a parallel section in the middle of the tower. The tower then began to crack at the base due to the extra weight, so another "skin" of brickwork was laid around the base, apparently without any attempt to bond it to the existing work. However, it is still fairly well preserved, though the sails and cap have been removed. {2} A Grade II listed tower mill dating from the early 19th century. It was built of red brick which was originally tarred. The building has a slightly bulbous tapering circular tower. {4}
