Full Description

The site of the deserted medieval settlement of Birkwood. {1}{2} A very fine limestone corbel head was found with other masonry fragments in early 1973, during the digging of a pipe trench in this area. The carving was of a humanoid head, thought to probably represent an angel, and possibly indicating the location of a former medieval chapel. Professor G. Zarnecki of the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London, thought that the treatment of the eyes and hair on the statue was entirely of Romanesque style and dated the carving to the third quarter of the 12th century. {3}{4}{5}
