Full Description

Site of the former Church of St Gabriel, one of two churches recorded at Binbrook in Domesday. The church is recorded as falling into ruin in 1822. The condition of St Gabriel was commented upon by J.H. Loft in 1826, who claimed that 'the Church was allowing it to be pulled down piecemeal until it fell down from want of repair'. Remains from both of the ruinous churches of St Gabriel and St Mary were used in the construction of the new Church of St Mary and St Gabriel, which was built on the site of the former St Mary's in 1869 (see MLI40674). Prints within the present church show the former Church of St Gabriel as being Norman to Early English in style. A freestanding column located amongst the many surviving gravestones of the old burial ground marks the former site of the church. {1}{2}{3}{4}
