Full Description

Aerial photographs in the area of TF 2631 7934, indicate the extent of the lost medieval village of Asterby. Traces of a large building were seen, and three human skeletons and an ancient dagger dug up, in Hall Close, a field near the church at Asterby. Except for banks and ditches forming minor fields, the earthworks in this area have been ploughed out. One steading is evident but this is modern, human remains were found at TF 2630 7950 and were re-interred (information from farmer). Hall close, where the skeletons and dagger were found in 1821 at TF 2645 7943 is arable (see PRN40569). No traces of a large building are visible.{1} The Medieval Village Research Group Index records that the village of Asterby is recorded in the Domesday Book and in the Lay Subsidies in 1334-36. It is also mentioned in documents of the twelfth century. The visual quality of the remains was deemed to be 'medium' with some parts of the earthworks being legible at the time of recording. {8}
