An Anglo-Saxon enamelled escutcheon from a hanging bowl was found in Benniworth in 1933. It is now in the City and County Museum, LCNCC 1353.33.{1}
This large escutcheon is of a fattish pear-shape, having a zoomorphic hook-termination with a long jaw which is stepped underneath to fit on the rim of the bowl. There is a bird-like look to the escutcheon, given by the lightly-curved spread tail. The escutcheon is thought to date to the mid-7th century.{4}
