Full Description

The north wing of Barkwith House was believed to date to the 16th century {1}, however a building survey undertaken in 2024 could find no evidence for fabric pre-dating the 17th to 18th century. The northeast wing may date to the mid 17th century, with extensions added in the 18th century, and again in the 19th century. The south wing of the building suffered a fire in 1920 at which point it was partially rebuilt. It may be likely that earlier timber framing elements were responsible for the spread of the fire, as it was noted that the fire was particularly fierce due to the quantity of wood in the walls. {3}{4}
