CROPMARKS SEEN FROM THE AIR BY T HAYES, JUNE 1959, PROBABLY ROMAN.{1} CROPMARKS (POSSIBLY ROMAN) AT TF17288043, SEEN FROM THE AIR BY T HAYES IN JUNE 1959. THESE ARE SOILMARKS SHOWING A CIRCLE, AND SUB- RECTANGULAR LINEAR MARKS SUGGESTIVE OF DRAINAGE. WITHOUT EXCAVATION THE CIRCLE CANNOT BE EXPLAINED. THE AREA IS NOW UNDER CROP. VIEWED FROM HIGH GROUND TO THE SOUTH (FROM WHICH ONE OF THE APs WAS EXPOSED), THERE ARE NO INDICATIONS OF THE SITE. THE ROMAN SUGGESTION OF AUTHORITY (F T BAKER) CANNOT BE SUBSTANTIATED, AND THE FARMER DOES NOT KNOW OF ANY FINDS BEING MADE.{2} EXTENSIVE CROPMARKS IN FIELDS WEST OF PANTON PARK MAINLY LINEAR IN CHARACTER, BUT AT LEAST ONE CIRCULAR. MOST OF ROMAN PERIOD, COURSE OF WHAT MIGHT BE ROAD E-W ACROSS THE SITE (TF173804).{5}
