Full Description

The deserted medieval village of Panton, with a double moated site, was levelled and ploughed in summer 1970, exposing at least 16 occupation areas - cobbled areas, large corner stones, and brick foundations. Pottery finds from Saxo-Norman to 18th century including Raeren, Bellarmine and early Frechen, Westerwald and metal. Sherds of greyware were found, including rim and base fragments. The collection of late 18th/19th century pottery includes manganese wares, Staffordshire slipware, Nottingham stoneware, mocha-ware and Wedgewood basalt. {1} Considerable traces of the deserted village at Panton are visible on air photographs. Beresford queries whether Panton is the Panton Parva mentioned in 1334. Canon Foster lists Hardwick, an extinct hamlet in or near Panton. Panton and Herdwyk are mentioned in the early 14th century, and in about 1565, Hardwicke, a hamlet in the parish of Panton, had two families. There are the remains of two homestead moats (one published and the other at TF 17567903). Within the indicated area, no other evidence of occupation was noted although there are extensive field banks and crofts. {2}{3}{4}{5}
