Full Description
PRN 40323
St Margaret's Church was built in 1764 by John Clark and rebuilt in 1895 by William Scorer.{2}{5}
No church is mentioned in the Domesday Survey; the earliest references are to clergy at Hemingby in 1281 and 1337. The chancel was described as being in a ruined state in the early sixteenth century; by 1602 this had been rectified but the church was in need of repairs. The present church was built in 1764 and presumably the earlier church was demolished around this time.{3}
During a watching brief in 1998, three sandstone walls were recorded, aligned variously north-east/south-west, north-west/south-east and east/west. The location and thickness of these walls makes it highly likely that they belong to the earlier church on this site, which was demolished about 1764. If so, the earlier church stood further to the west than the present building.{3}{4}
