Full Description

The Church of St Swithin has its origins in the 11th century. It was encased in brick in 1758 and restored in 1892. The lower part of the tower and two doorways are Norman (1066AD to 1200AD) and there are remains of Early English (13th century) arches and piers in the chancel arch. {1} The church is in normal use. The spelling of the dedication is usually St Swithin, although it has also appeared as St Swithun. {2}{3}{4} A parish church which has architectural features surviving from the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries and from 1758 and 1892. It was restored by W. Scorer. It was constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and coursed limestone rubble and has lead and slate roofs. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {5} The complete remodelling of the church, in the ‘Gothick’ architectural style, was undertaken to provide a mausoleum for the Earls of Lincoln and the Dukes of Newcastle under Lyne (the Clinton family). It included a new entrance into the church from the west and a new approach leading directly from the Lincoln to Horncastle road with the express purpose of providing an impressive private road for the Clinton family and their guests; and a striking route to the mausoleum. {6} Historic graffiti at this church was recorded in September 2019 by the Lincolnshire Medieval Graffiti Project. The survey identified a number of historic marks in various places within the church, including a monogram carving for Christ amongst other markings on the font. {7}{8}
