Full Description

J. Conway Walters reported in his book 'Records of Parishes around Horncastle' (1904), p.39, that in Edlington parish 'until about three years ago when it was destroyed by dynamite, there existed an enormous boulder, standing on rising ground, about 60 yards from the present highway, on the farm of Mr Robert Scarby, which weighed about ten tons. Its height being about ten feet, width four and a half feet and its thickness about three feet.'{1} There is a pile of large stones in Thimbleby parish near the parish boundary with Edlington that may be remnants of the Edlington stone that was blown up before 1901. The stone looks like limestone and there appears to be a number of cylindrical drilled holes on one side which is perhaps where the charges were laid to split the stone. The stone is probably a glacial erratic. {2}
