Full Description

FROM PREVIOUSLY NOTED SITE (PRN 40230), THOUGH NOTE DIFFERENT GRID REFERENCES, ONE MORTARIUM STAMP, BADLY WORN, ONE SHERD OF DECORATED SAMIAN, ONE BASE SHERD OF SAMIAN WITH A STAMP, ONE DUPONDIUS OF VESPASIAN, REV - ILLEGIBLE. NOTE ON THE MORTARIA STAMP BY K HARTLEY. THE TWO LINED STAMP PROBABLY GIVES THE POTTERS' NAME FROM LEFT TO RIGHT IN THE LOWER LINE AND RETROGRADE IN THE UPPER. THIS STAMP WAS NEVER COMPLETELY IMPRESSED, BUT THE NAME CAN EASILY BE DEDUCED WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ONE LETTER, AS CONIRLVS. OTHER STAMPS OF HIS NAME HAVE BEEN RECORDED FROM CAISTOR(2), GRANDFORD NEAR MARCH(2), STANGROUND SOUTH(2) AND IN PETERBOROUGH MUSEUM. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT HE WORKED IN THE NENE VALLEY, PERHAPS IN THE CAISTOR AREA. HIS MORTARIA WERE CERTAINLY MADE IN THE 2ND CENTURY, PROBABLY ABOUT AD 130-180.{1}
