Full Description

A concentration of late medieval and early post-medieval pottery was found in 1964, in this area to the north of Great Beats Farm, Coningsby. The assemblage was largely comprised of pieces dating from the 16th century and included quantities of broken pottery and wasters, all recovered from an area of sooty soil. The concentration of pottery was thought to indicate the presence of a former late medieval or early post-medieval pottery kiln somewhere in the vicinty. The site was partially excavated by Ethel Rudkin, and whilst no actual kiln remains were identified, further quantities of broken pottery were noted, some of which may have been pieces of Toynton or Bolingbroke ware. Some of the pottery is now in Lincoln Museum. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
