A polished stone axe found in 1959.{1} A polished stone axe from Tattershall in the City and County Museum donated by Mr G. Taylor. (The accession number of the axe indicates that this is almost certainly the axe referred to by source number 1 above.) {2}{3}{5} In 1964 Mr G. Taylor indicated an approximate find spot at TF 2122 5670, and said that the axe was found during ditching work. {4} A stone axe from Tattershall made from tremolite fels. {6} This is a stone axehead made from nephrite. {7} It is now known that the stone used to make jadeite and nephrite axeheads in the early Neolithic period was quarried from high-altitude quarries in the Swiss and Italian Alps and northern Apennines. The axeheads were then exported from the Alpine region across the continent of Europe eventually reaching Britain and Ireland. {8}
