Full Description

Barbed and tanged arrowhead found on 'Martin Moor', near Woodhall Spa. The find is in City and County Museum. Acc no. 21.35.{1} Cropmarks seen on a P Everson aerial photograph: a square ditched enclosure with internal ring ditch, two linear ditches, another ring ditch and further features are visible in the same field. The site is mostly in Roughton parish but runs across into adjacent parishes too. {2} A possible temple site copy of aerial photographs are now in the HER. There are also faint ring ditches evident, possibly a barrow cemetery. The site was evaluated by the Monument Protection Programme as a possible hengiform monument or as a Roman temple/mausoleum site. It is thought that the cropmarks represent neither of these classes of monument. Given the proximity of second world war defensive sites, it has been suggested that this site is of recent origin perhaps associated with nearby searchlight batteries. {3} The National Mapping Programme records the site as a possible unknown prehistoric cropmark site. {4}
