Full Description

40087 The settlement of Poolham is not recorded in the Domesday Book. The first documentary evidence for settlement at Poolham occurs in 1150-60, at which time it was known as 'Polum', and it is also documented later in the medieval period. 'Polum' derives from the Old English for 'at the pools'. The village no longer exists, but a moat survives which had within it a mid-eighteenth century house called Poolham Hall (see 40381). The Hall was bulldozed into the moat in 1971. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
