Full Description

Site of the deserted settlement of Poolham (now in Horsington parish, but previously in Edlington parish. The first documentary evidence for settlement at Poolham occurs in 1150-60, at which time it was known as 'Polum'. It is not recorded in the earlier Domesday Book, though may have been too small to warrant mention at that time. Further documentary sources refer to the settlement later in the medieval period. The name 'Polum' is thought to derive from the Old English for 'at the pools'. The village no longer exists, but a moat survives which had within it a mid-eighteenth century house called Poolham Hall (see 40381). The Hall was bulldozed into the moat in 1971. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
