Full Description

A Bronze Age socketed axe (broken), with three ribs, found at Horsington Holmes in 1932, now in the City and County Museum (accession no.55.32). Davey records this socketed axe with a grid reference of TF 160 660. This is a general centralised grid reference for Horsington Holmes and the findspot of this axe is unknown. {1}{2}{3}{4} A flanged axe (accession no.54.56 in City and County Museum), and a broken spear of middle to late Bronze Age date (accession no.55.56), said to have been found at Horsington. In a letter (dated 07/02/1957) in the old museum file the donator of these objects says that he obtained them from a gentleman from Coningsby who came by them from unknown previous owners. He could only say that they were originally found by a farm labourer during the course of his work at Horsington. The old museum record card suggests that the 1932 axe and the spearhead may have formed part of a hoard but the evidence for this is seemingly based only on the fact that both are broken and both were found in Horsington parish; it is pure surmise. Davey records the flanged axe as a looped palstave. {2}{3}{4}
